Beginning Band: Foundations of Instrumental Music.
This course is intended to prepare future music educators to teach beginning band students. The emphasis of instrumental music is on instrument selection, playing techniques, tone production, posture, breathing, articulation, music literacy, rehearsal strategies. Teachers will develop their understanding of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments and will be able to communicate how to teach them effectively to a novice student.
There will be discussions on classroom management, curriculum planning, assessment strategies, and effective ways to create a more inclusive and active learning environment.
Students will take part in demonstrations of lessons and lesson planning, peer teaching experiences, and reflective discussions that link theories to practice in the classroom. At the end of the course, future teachers will be able to design and implement developmentally appropriate beginning band music, assess student learning, and create positive musical experiences that enhance young instrumentalists’ development. This course is the foundation for those who wish to study music education and instrumental teaching.
